Princess Cruise Line : Grand Romance At Sea
THE
LARGEST LOVE BOAT, GRAND PRINCESS, TO DEBUT WITH INDUSTRY'S FIRST WEDDING
CHAPEL When the world's largest ship, Grand Princess, debuted in May, it boasted the first ocean-going wedding chapel and offers the only at-sea wedding program allowing passengers to be married by the ship's captain. The line's new wedding program includes a selection of ceremony and reception packages which will make a couple's wedding, reception and honeymoon planning a convenient, one-stop project. "What could be more fitting than the largest Love Boat debuting the first wedding program at sea," said Rick James, Princess Cruises senior vice president of sales and corporate relations. "Not only are we offering passengers an easy and romantic way to get married and honeymoon, we're turning cruising lore into reality by having the Captain perform the wedding ceremony. Until now, it was a common misconception that the captain was empowered to do this."
A choice of three different wedding packages aboard Grand Princess offers a number of special touches and brings together the talents of the ship's chefs, musicians and photographers. Included in each is music, champagne, bridal bouquet and groom's matching boutonniere, photo package, video recording of the ceremony, wedding cake, souvenir wedding certificate and a special lithograph painting of Grand Princess signed by the captain. The couple also has the opportunity to add music performed by an organist or string quartet, candlelight, floral arrangements and pampering pre-ceremony spa treatments for the bride. Packages begin at $1,400 and include fees for the ceremony, registration and official marriage certificate. After the ceremony, a selection of three different reception options will continue the celebration. All packages include music, hors d'oeuvres, beverages, and three-tiered wedding cake. The ship's photographer will also be available during the reception with photos available for purchase. The one-hour parties for up to 80 guests begin at $70 per person.
"Offering passengers the opportunity to get married on board is just one more example of the choice and variety we've designed into our Grand Class ships," added James. Marriages aboard ship are performed by the captain under the authority of the ship's registry and are legal marriages. Couples will receive their official marriage certificate following the cruise. Of course, once the ceremony and reception are finished, the honeymoon cruise is just beginning. During its inaugural season in the Western Mediterranean, Grand Princess will visit a number of romantic ports between Barcelona and Istanbul before repositioning to the Caribbean for seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruises from Fort Lauderdale. Debuting in May 2001, the 109,000-ton, $450 million Grand Princess is the largest and most expensive cruise ship ever built. In addition to a wedding chapel, the 2,600 passenger vessel offers passengers the first sea-going virtual reality center, blue screen video studio, Southwestern-themed restaurant, swim-against-the-current lap pool, two-level children's and teen centers, the largest casino at sea, a spectacular disco in the sky suspended 150 feet above the sea and 710 cabins with private balconies, the largest number in the industry.
